The Finite Element Method: A Practical Course:
 
   

Course Highlights:
In the past decades, the finite element method (FEM) has been developed into a key indispensable technology in the modelling and simulation of various engineering systems.  In the development of an advanced engineering system, engineers have to go through a very rigorous process of modelling, simulation, visualization, analysis, designing, prototyping, testing, and finally fabrication/construction.  As such, techniques related to modelling and simulation in a rapid and effective way play an increasingly important role in building advanced engineering systems, and therefore, the practical application of FEM has multiplied manifolds in the past years.

Objective of the course
The aim of the course is to provide necessary concepts, theories and techniques of the FEM for participants to be able to use commercial FEM package to solve practical problems.  Important fundamental and classical theories for linear problems are introduced in a straightforward and easy to understand fashion.  Treatments of engineering problems in analyzing structural and thermal systems including micro structural systems are also discussed.

This course covers basis, useful and practical techniques of the FEM for engineers and researchers to solve primarily, linear problems in mechanical and civil engineering with the main focus in structural mechanics and heat transfer.

  2. Introduction to mechanics for solids and structures
  3. The finite element method procedure
  4. FEM for trusses, beams, frames, 2D & 3D solids, plates and shells, and heat transfer problems
  5. Special purpose elements
  6. Modelling techniques

Case studies will be provided to demonstrate the theory, methodology, techniques, and the practical applications of the FEM.
